zipcar - waiting for approval
May 11th, 2007
I was convinced to try ZipCar over AutoShare (at least initially) by way of a promotion that eliminated the application fees and gave me a small credit to try out the service. While I still feel as though I’m a better fit for AutoShare because it’s Canadian and has existed in the city for a while, I’m itching to give any car sharing service a spin.
So, I applied to ZipCar on Tuesday, picked up my ZipCard on Thursday and am waiting for the insurance approval step. The website suggests a typical approval takes 2-3 days, and it’s Friday, day 3.5.
I feel like a kid in a candy store. I just can’t deal with this.

Easy solution: Slim Jim. You know you want to.

Small observation, looking at their websites: AutoShare seems more evenly distributed around the city with locations near subway stops, whereas ZipCar appears to have a higher concentration downtown.

jc - I think that method of entry was mentioned in the member contract…
pvb - Autoshare does appear to have more cars in general. Though, zipcar does seem to have greater variety of vehicles - i.e. they have a pickup truck, might be handy for lumber runs - which is why I’m itching for approval!

I’ve seen an AutoShare van parked in the lot by my place. It’s definitely convenient to have a van or pickup available when you need one for a couple of hours.
